Relationship Counseling

Relationships can bring us overwhelming joy, love and happiness. But they can also bring us pain, open up old wounds and cause intense feelings of anger, frustration and resentment. The emotions we experience are complicated and confusing. We doubt our friend’s or our partner’s intentions, confused by our own motivations and uncertain what path to take forward. Emotional connections can be strongest when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable in relationships, to feel open without judgement and well, to just be ‘ourselves.’ But this openness can lead to barriers as this vulnerability can lead to feeling rejected. We catch ourselves’ dating the ‘same type’ of person, attracting the ‘same type’ of friend in our lives.’ We are hurt each time. We finally acknowledge the most important pattern in relationships – we are doing the same thing over and over and over again.

Trusting others typically means that we are willing to take chances with how they will perceive and react to our expressed emotions. If we show others we are sad, we hope that they will react to us with empathy, support and care. Unfortunately, even our closest relationships are not always able to give us the support in the way we need it. This may lead to shutting down or withdrawing from the relationship.

I draw from frameworks such as Attachment Theory to explore how early relationships influence current connections, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address unhelpful thought patterns that impact interactions, and Solution-Focused Therapy to create practical steps toward healthier relational dynamics. Mindfulness practices are also integrated to help you stay present in your interactions and manage intense emotions without being overwhelmed.
